Driving test

Practical Driving tests are conducted by the Driving Standards Agency. Our local practical test centre is at Pease Pottage, Crawley. Tests are conducted throughout the week, and sometimes at weekends with an examiner. Practical driving tests (when you are ready and driving competantly without the aid of your instructor!) can be booked via the DSA's website: www.dsa.gov.uk

Here at Abandon your L plates we strongly recommend that you take a mock driving test prior to booking your actual test. This mock test will, where possible, be conducted by a separate fully qualified instructor. They will treat you as if you are on your test. This may be the first opportunity you have to show that you are a competant and safe driver, without assistance!

The instructor will advise you the outcome of your test and will also give you practical advise regarding your driving and your current ability. A written report will be given to your instructor so you can discuss any areas where further training is required before you book your practical test.

Current fees for booking your practical driving test with the DSA are £62.00 for weekday tests

How do I know if I am ready?

Your instructor will be advising you during your lessons as to your current capability and if there are any areas where you need to improve or have more practise. You may have a progress report card, which your instructor will keep updated as your skills improve.

Ask yourself: Does my instructor need to use the dual controls/verbally stop me from making a serious error? Give me instructions other than directions every lesson that I have?

If the answer is Yes to those questions then you are not ready to book your test!

But how do you know if you're ready to take it?

The DSA recommend around 52 hours of driving lessons plus plenty of private practice to make sure you're ready and consistantly getting it right without any help. But everyone learns at different speeds, some people take less lessons and some take more. Don't take the test just for the 'experience', it will be a waste of time, money and a big disappointment.
Your instructor will tell you when you are ready to take the test, helping you become a safe driver and get you up to test standard as quickly and safely as possible.

On your driving test day don't forget to bring with you...
Both parts of your provisional license (paper part and plastic card), theory test certificate and your driving test appointment letter.  Forgetting something could result in your test being cancelled and you losing your test fee!
